What is The Science of Mind?
|
What Science of Mind can do for you.
|
|
Science of Mind is really the Science of
Consciousness. It is about becoming aware of how our consciousness,
expressed through our thoughts, images and feelings which comprise our attitude
towards life, affects what happens to us.
In other words, it is
about
how our thoughts, images, feelings and words manifest, either consciously or unconsciously, to
affect our experience, our reality. Have you ever asked yourself the
question why one man is wealthy while another man is poor?
Or why one woman is always healthy, while another woman is
continually ill? Is it a case where God chooses to bless one over the
other? Or does God choose to punish one and
favor the other for some unknown reason known only to Himself. The
answer is neither. The Good News is that God holds nothing against any
one of us. St. Paul
tell us in Acts 10:34, God has no favorites. We all stand equal in His eyes.
So the question is, if God has no favorites then why
do people suffer? Why do bad things happen to good people? More
specifically, why do bad things happen to you? Chances are, if you were
to engage the types of people cited above in a conversation; and listen carefully to what
they were saying about themselves, and about how they viewed their lives.
It
would be pretty clear where the focus of their thinking is. In other
words, what people say often tells you how they
think, imagine and feel about themselves. How they think, imagine and feel about their lives;
and how they see the world. It tells you as well the kinds of thoughts and ideas they
are continually feeding back into their own minds or consciousness about who and what
they are, what the world is, their place in it, and what they think they
can expect.
The great secret of life is that what you think is
what you get. All that you think, feel and imagine reflects back to you.
This is the Law of Reflection, a variation of the Spiritual Law of Cause
and Effect. Thoughts, as well as the images and feelings they produce,
out-picture into our lives as conditions, situations, and experiences.
They mirror our thinking, our consciousness, our attitudes. When our
thoughts are good, we experience good. When our thoughts are negative,
we experience the negative. In short, what we think is what we
get. So in order to change what we are getting, all that is necessary is
to change is what we are thinking. Yes, it really is that simple. But
changing our conditioned thinking is the hard part. But it can be done
and simply so once you know how to do it.
The Science of Mind is about
learning how to consciously use those Spiritual Laws that govern and
affect our existence for the good of ourselves and others. Like any good
science, it is demonstrable on a consistent basis. Anyone can do it
(yes, even you!), and you can joyfully prove the truth of it to yourself time
and time again by bringing blessings into your life instead of curses.

There is a mental
atmosphere (consciousness) all around us. It is Mind and It is
Intelligence. It knows, feels, hears, sees, and understands everything.
It is universal. That is, It is ever present. It is always where
we are. It is receptive. That is, It receives our thought. It has
power to do anything, to produce anything, to create anything.
- Dr. Ernest
Holmes

It can liberate you. It can open you to a new, deeper
and more loving relationship with God and all of creation. You will
learn that God does not hate you, judge you, condemn or reject you for
any reason. Nor
does He want you to suffer. Nor does He make you suffer. God truly loves
you, and wishes for you every good. He forgives you at every moment you
inwardly turn to Him. Indeed, you will come to realize that there is no
creature so vile that it is not loved, and no sin so great that it is
not forgiven. You will not only discover this for yourself, but actually
feel the Truth of it. Moreover, you will find that through the
proper use of the Principles of Science of Mind, such as learning how to
consciously use the Law of Cause and Effect, you can free yourself from
the everyday doubts, fears, anxieties, angers, and resentments that
plague most people; and find a happier life filled with the goodness,
abundance, healing and fulfillment you might
have never thought possible for yourself.
Dr. Joseph Murphy said this about the study of the
Science of Mind.
"...you will lay hold of a miracle-working power that will lift you up
from confusion, misery, melancholy, and failure, and guide you to your
true place, solve your difficulties, sever you from emotional and
physical bondage, and place you on the royal road to freedom, happiness,
and peace of mind. This miracle-working power of your subconscious mind
can heal you of your sickness; make you vital and strong again. In
learning how to use your inner powers, you will open the prison door of
fear and enter into a life described by Paul as the glorious liberty of
the sons of God."
Ralph Waldo Emerson said about this Science; that
once you understand it, you are no longer the victim of the wheel of
fortune, karma or fate; subject to its seemingly uncaring and arbitrary whims. Rather, you learn to
take control and command it.
"So use all that is called Fortune.
Most men gamble with her, and gain all, and lose all,
as her wheel rolls. But do thou leave as unlawful
these winnings, and deal with Cause and Effect, the
chancellors of God. In the Will (Mind) work and
acquire, and thou hast chained the wheel of Chance,
and shalt always drag her after thee." - From
Emerson's Essay on Self
Reliance.

Dr. Holmes founded the Institute of Religious Science
in Los Angeles, CA in 1927. This later became the Church of Religious
Science in 1954. In 2005, because many people began to confuse the name
Religious Science with Scientology, the name was changed to The United
Centers for Spiritual Living. Religious Science is not connected with,
nor is it in anyway related to, Scientology, its teachings or founder.
They are two separate and distinct organizations with very different
philosophies.
This teaching is based upon the textbook, The Science
of Mind, written by Dr. Ernest Holmes (pictured above). For a more in
